Draft — pending legal review
Terms of Service
Draft — 2026-07-06 · English version governs
This is a working draft and does not yet constitute a binding legal agreement. Some terms are marked as placeholders pending legal review. The English text is the sole authoritative version; any translation of interface labels is provided for convenience only.
1. Who we are and what this covers
Foxing (“Foxing”, “we”, “us”) operates the website at foxing.ai and the reading service available through it (the “Service”). These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) govern your access to and use of the Service. By using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
[TODO — legal: The operating legal entity, its registered address, and jurisdiction are not yet decided. Insert entity name and details here before publication.]
2. Accounts and eligibility
You may read parts of the Service without an account. Some features require you to create one. You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure and for activity under your account. You must be old enough to form a binding contract in your jurisdiction to use an account.
3. The reading material
The books offered through the public library are works in the public domain. The editions we serve are prepared from source files published by Standard Ebooks under the CC0 public-domain dedication. This is a factual acknowledgement of the source. Foxing is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Standard Ebooks. We make no warranty that any particular work is free of third-party rights in every jurisdiction; public-domain status can differ by country.
4. The AI companion
The reading companion is powered by a third-party large language model provided by DeepSeek. Its responses are generated automatically and may be inaccurate, incomplete, or otherwise unsuitable. They are not professional advice of any kind. You are responsible for how you use them. We do not guarantee the availability, accuracy, or continuity of the AI features, and we may change or discontinue the underlying model or provider at any time.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in breach of these Terms;
- attempt to disrupt, overload, reverse-engineer, or circumvent the security or rate limits of the Service;
- scrape, bulk-download, or resell the Service or its content except as expressly permitted;
- misuse the AI features to generate unlawful, infringing, or abusive content.
We may suspend or terminate access that we reasonably believe violates these Terms or the law.
6. Your content and uploads
User uploads are not yet available on Foxing. The clauses in this section are drafted in advance and take effect only if and when private uploading is enabled. They will be reviewed before that feature launches.
If uploading becomes available: you represent and warrant that you own or are authorised to upload and use any file you upload, and that doing so does not infringe anyone’s rights. You retain your rights in your uploads. You grant us only the limited licence needed to store your files and provide the reading and AI features to you. You agree to indemnify and hold Foxing harmless against claims arising from content you upload in breach of these Terms. We may limit upload volume and prohibit redistribution to prevent large-scale unlawful sharing, and we operate a repeat-infringer policy (see the Copyright section below).
7. Copyright complaints (DMCA)
We respect intellectual-property rights and respond to valid notices of alleged infringement. If you believe material on the Service infringes your copyright, send a notice with the elements required under the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) — identification of the work, identification and location of the allegedly infringing material, your contact details, a good-faith statement, a statement under penalty of perjury, and your signature — to [email protected]. We will act on valid notices expeditiously and, where applicable, honour counter-notices. We terminate the accounts of repeat infringers.
[TODO — legal: DMCA Designated Agent registration with the U.S. Copyright Office is pending. Insert the registered agent’s name and registration number here once registered, and keep the registration renewed every three years.]
8. Plans, payment, and changes
The Service is currently free to use within its published limits. Paid subscription plans are planned but not yet available; their terms, prices, and billing details will be presented to you before any charge is made and will form part of these Terms at that time.
9. Termination
You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms, if required by law, or if we discontinue the Service.
[TODO — legal: notice periods, effect of termination on any paid plan, and data-deletion timelines are placeholders pending review.]
10. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law. To the extent permitted by law, Foxing is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service.
[TODO — legal: liability caps, mandatory consumer-law carve-outs, and jurisdiction-specific limits are placeholders pending review and depend on the operating entity’s jurisdiction.]
11. Governing law
[TODO — legal: governing law and venue are undecided and depend on the operating legal entity’s jurisdiction. Insert once the entity is established.]
12. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as the Service evolves. We will update the date at the top and, where changes are material, take reasonable steps to notify you. Continued use after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
