About Foxing
The name comes from foxing — the warm, rust-brown marks that time leaves on the pages of an old book.
What Foxing is
Foxing is a quiet place to read the classics — and an AI companion that reads them alongside you. Choose any book from the public domain, open it, and read at your own pace. Select a sentence and your companion responds to that exact moment: it only knows the page you are on, because that is all it has been shown. Your highlights, questions, and progress become part of your reading of the book.
The books
Every book in the public library is in the public domain. The editions we serve are prepared from source files published by Standard Ebooks, a volunteer project that releases carefully typeset public-domain editions under the CC0 public-domain dedication. We are grateful for that work. Foxing is an independent product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or otherwise connected to Standard Ebooks — the reference here is a factual acknowledgement of the source, nothing more.
The companion
The reading companion is powered by a large language model provided by a third-party service, DeepSeek. Because it is an AI, its responses can be wrong, incomplete, or simply not to your taste — treat them as one reader’s thoughts, not authoritative fact. Every reply is generated by AI. How your conversations are handled, including where they are processed, is described in our Privacy Policy.
What it costs
You can start reading without an account. Creating a free account raises your daily limits. Paid plans are planned but not yet available; details and prices will be published before any charge is ever made. We do not show ads.
